Holy week – Day 1 - Palm Sunday– Bible Study

(Let's have fast freshback >>> The Pharisees wanted to kill Jesus (after He resurrected Lazarus), they invited Jesus to have supper with them. John’s Gospel (John 12:1-11) the place of the supper is the house of Simon the leper where Jesus and Lazarus are honoured  guests. Mary Anoint Jesus for His burial John 19:39-40. In John’s Gospel, she Anoints Jesus’s feet and Matthew and Mark record how she pours the ointment on His head (Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9, Luke 7:36-50). There would be not time for Anointing later Mark 16:1. <<< let's talk about Palm Sunday)

Palm Sunday is that of Jesus coming into Jerusalem-also known as the triumphal entry, and the Sunday before the crucifixion John 12:1 “Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany”, John 12:12 “On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem”- which appears in all four Gospel accounts Matthew 21:1-17; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:29-40; John 12:12-19. Palm Sunday marked the start of what we know as Passion Week, the final seven days of Jesus’ earthly ministry-the “beginning of the end” of Jesus’ work on earth.

Palm Sunday began with Jesus and His disciples traveling over the Mount of Olives. The Lord sent two disciples ahead into the village of Bethphage to find an animal to ride. Just as Jesus had said they would Luke 19:29–30 “And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, 30 Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.”. “The Lord needs it” Luke 19:31–34 “And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him. 32 And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them. 33 And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt? 34 And they said, The Lord hath need of him.”. Amazingly, the owners were satisfied with that answer and let the disciples go. “They brought the donkey to Jesus Luke 19:35 “And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.”. As Jesus ascended toward Jerusalem, a large multitude gathered around Him. His purpose in riding into Jerusalem was to make public His claim to be their Messiah and King of Israel in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. Matthew says that the King coming on the foal of a donkey was an exact fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”. John 12:13 “after He resurrected Lazarus, Pharisees wanted to kill Jesus, they invited Jesus to have dinner with them Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.”, Branches of palm tree used in celebration of victory. By waving palm branches (A Jewish national symbol) the people greet Jesus as “the Davidic King” and echo the language of Psalms 118:25-26 “Save now, I beseech thee, O Lord: O Lord, I beseech thee, send now prosperity. 26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord: we have blessed you out of the house of the Lord.”. (In Revelation 7:9, John saw a multitude with palm branches in Heaven. ) Most of the crowd probably understood the title King of Israel in a political and military sense. They hoped that Jesus would use His amazing powers to overthrow roman rule and lead Israel to independence. Witnesses of the rising of Lazarus give their testimony, and people come out to see Jesus because of this miracle. They shouted “Hosanna”, A Hebrew expression meaning “Save” that become an exclamation of praise Jeremiah 31:7 The King of Israel. Little John beautifully portrayed Jesus as the humble Shepherd-King of Zechariah 9:9 who comes to the Holy City to take His rightful place. The people hailed and praised Him as the “King who comes in the name of the Lord” as He rode to the temple, (what they did not understand was that it wasn’t time to set up the kingdom yet—although Jesus had tried to tell them so Luke 19:11–12 “And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.”.) The crowd’s actions along the road give rise to the name “Palm Sunday”: Matthew 21:8 “And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.”.

“Fear no more…” taken from Isaiah 40:9 “O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength;”, which refer to one who brings good news Isaiah 44:2 “”. John 12:15 (Zechariah 9:9), A “foal” or Donkey’s colt was an animal that had never borne a burden. It was there for young and inexperienced. A King would ride such an untrained beast when HE WAS ON A MISSION OF PEACE, WHEREAS HE WOULD RIDE A MATURE, TRAINED HOURSE WHEN ON A MISSION OF WAR Revelation 19:11 “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.” (WHERE JESUS COMES ON A WHITE HOURSE). It is the story of the King who came as a lowly servant on a donkey, not a prancing steed, not in royal robes, but on the clothes of the poor and humble. Jesus Christ comes not to conquer by force as earthly kings but by love, grace, mercy, and His own sacrifice for His people. John 18:36 “Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.”, He conquers not nations but hearts and minds. Luke 19:9-11 “And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. 11 And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.”, He came to save John 3:17-21 “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”.

Says The LORD “I Will Raise Up for David a Righteous Branch” (Jeremiah 23:1-8 and 33:14-16) GOD THE FATHER will restore all the nation from exile n will provide true "shepherds" who will care for His flock. In this passage the LORD promises the coming of the ideal king, "a righteous Branch" in the line of David. The tree has been cut off but yet if you leave it there you will find a branch or a shoot that is growing out of it, because though it is cut off, it is not dead. During the Babylonian exile the royal line of David was cut off, but not destroyed. Yet GOD cause a branch to sprout from that stump. CHRIST IS THAT RIGHTEOUS BRANCH AND HE WILL REIGN OVER ALL OF THE EARTH ONE DAY. Jeremiah says, they will call Him "GOD THE FATHER our Righteousness" because He is Righteous. He will lead people into Righteousness. It is only through the ideal king Messiah David whose just and victorious rule the hopes of Judah will ever be realized. No other dynasty will have everlasting rule. The Royal Psalms give emphasis to this same idealism. And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: Isaiah 11:1

John 12:12-18
On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.
16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.
17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.
18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

Psalm 118:1-2, 19-26
O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.
2 Let Israel now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.
Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the Lord:
20 This gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter.
21 I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.
22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.
23 This is the Lord's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
24 This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Save now, I beseech thee, O Lord: O Lord, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.
26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord: we have blessed you out of the house of the Lord.
27 God is the Lord, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.
28 Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee.
29 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

We all sinned n deserve GOD’s judgment, but our loving FATHER, GOD sent HIS only begotten SON to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in HIM. JESUS, our LORD who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that HE died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buries n rose from the dead according to the Holy Bible. If you truly believe n trust in your heart, receiving JESUS alone as your SAVIOUR, declaring (by Baptism) JESUS is The LORD n SAVIOUR, you will be SAVED from the judgment n spend ETERNITY with GOD in HEAVEN…. In The name of our LORD JESUS CHRIST.. Amen
