Lent – Day 21 – Bible Study
Mark 12:28-34
And one of the scribes
came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had
answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
29 And Jesus answered
him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is
one Lord
30 And thou shalt love
the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy
mind, and with all thy strength this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is
like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none
other commandment greater than these.
32 And the scribe said
unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth for there is one God; and
there is none other but he
33 And to love him with
all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with
all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole
burnt offerings and sacrifices.
34 And when Jesus saw that
he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of
God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.
The phrase one of the scribes may indicate that others were
standing by ready to challenge Jesus (See Matthew 22:34-35). This is
the first time an individual Scribe approached Jesus. He wanted to know which
command was most important the rabbis had counted 613 commandments in into
weightier and lesser.
Here, Jesus quoted the Shema Deuteronomy 6:4-5 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is
one LORD: 5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with
all thy soul, and with all thy might.”, A scripture
passage that pious Jews recited every morning and evening. The words affirmed
monotheistic orthodoxy (The Lord is one), identified the primary affection with
which people were to relate to God (Love), and emphasized the necessity to do
so with one’s total being: Heart (Affections), Soul
(Spirit), Mind (Intelligence) and Strength (the will) . The scribe asked Jesus for one commandment, but Jesus gave him
two Royal law. Love for the God and for neighbors, the first commandment. No one
before Jesus had combined these commandments Leviticus 19:18 “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any
grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself: I am the LORD.”, Deuteronomy 6:5 “And thou shalt love the LORD thy God
with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”, but it became standard for His followers James
2:8-11 “If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love
thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well
9 But
if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as
transgressors.
10 For
whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty
of all.
11 For
he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou
commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the
law.”Jesus even mentioned that it’s far more important than all the
burnt offerings and sacrifices. The Ten Commandments in Exodus 20 deal with our
relationship with God and then our relationship with other people. One
naturally flows out of the other. Without a right relationship with God, our
relationships with others will not be right, either. The cause of the world’s
problems is that man needs to be reconciled to God.
Romans
13:8-10 “Owe no man any thing, but to love one another for he that loveth
another hath fulfilled the law.
9 For
this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not
steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be
any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou
shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10 Love
worketh no ill to his neighbour therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.”
Galatians
5:14 “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy
neighbour as thyself.”
1 John 4:11-20 “Beloved, if God so loved us,
we ought also to love one another.
12 No
man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and
his love is perfected in us.
13
Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of
his Spirit.
14 And
we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of
the world.
15
Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and
he in God.
16 And
we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he
that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
17
Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of
judgment because as he is, so are we in this world.
18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear because fear hath
torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 We
love him, because he first loved us.
20 If a
man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar for he that loveth
not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?”
1 John
4:19-21 “We love him, because he first loved us.
20 If a
man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar for he that loveth
not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21 And
this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother
also.”
John
3:16-17 “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the
Son of man be lifted up
15 That
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For
God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world
through him might be saved.
18 He
that believeth on him is not condemned but he that believeth not is condemned
already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of
God.”
Psalm 81:6-16 “I removed
his shoulder from the burden his hands were delivered from the pots.
7 Thou calledst in
trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder I
proved thee at the waters of Meribah.
Selah.
8 Hear, O my people, and
I will testify unto thee O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me;
9 There shall no strange
god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.
10 I am the LORD thy God,
which brought thee out of the land of Egypt open thy mouth wide, and I will
fill it.
11 But my people would
not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.
12 So I gave them up unto
their own hearts' lust and they walked in their own counsels.
13 Oh that my people had
hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!
14 I should soon have
subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries.
15 The haters of the LORD
should have submitted themselves unto him but their time should have endured
for ever.
16 He should have fed
them also with the finest of the wheat and with honey out of the rock should I
have satisfied thee.”
Hosea 14:2-9 “Take with
you words, and turn to the LORD say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and
receive us graciously so will we render the calves of our lips.
3 Asshur shall not save
us; we will not ride upon horses neither will we say any more to the work of
our hands, Ye are our gods for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.
4 I will heal their
backsliding, I will love them freely for mine anger is turned away from him.
5 I will be as the dew
unto Israel he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.
6 His branches shall
spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon.
7 They that dwell under
his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine
the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.
8 Ephraim shall say, What
have I to do any more with idols? I have
heard him, and observed him I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found.
9 Who is wise, and he
shall understand these things? prudent,
and he shall know them? for the ways of
the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them but the transgressors shall
fall therein.”

We all sinned n deserve GOD’s judgment, but our loving FATHER, GOD sent HIS only begotten SON to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in HIM. JESUS, our LORD who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that HE died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buries n rose from the dead according to the Holy Bible. If you truly believe n trust in your heart, receiving JESUS alone as your SAVIOUR, declaring (by Baptism) JESUS is The LORD n SAVIOUR, you will be SAVED from the judgment n spend ETERNITY with GOD in HEAVEN….
