Lent – Day 25 – Bible Study – Healing – Part 2

The healing of the royal office’s son completes the “cana cycle” in John’s Gospel, which duration from with a “sign” (See John 2:11) performed by Jesus in Cana of Galilee (See the sings-scripture’s addresses in the paragraph below) to (See John 4:54) and begins and ends with a “sign” performed by Jesus in Cana of Galilee. The present sign is rare instance of long distance Healing performed by Jesus. The royal official was probably a gentile centurion, possibly in service to Harold (See Matthew 6:14) His son illness involved fever (See John 4:52) and appears to have been terminal.  The story resembles that of the gentile centurion in Matthew 8:5-13 and Luke 7:2-10, but this not the same incident. All three signs featured in the Cana cycle (The turning water into wine, The temple clearing, and the healing of the royal official’s son) sat forth Jesus as The Messiah, who showed convincing proofs of His Divine commotion.

Today we see in the first reading that God rejoices in His people and He creates them “to be a joy.” Then in the psalm we read that we should praise the Lord because He has rescued us! And then the Gospel tells us that Jesus saves the life of a young child in Capernaum even though Jesus is far away, in Cana, at the time. (BTW, The distance from Capernaum to Cana was about 15 miles, the journey was mostly uphill conversely, from Cana Jesus would come down to Capernaum.) Amazing… right!

John 4:43-54
Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast for they also went unto the feast.
46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son for he was at the point of death.
48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.
52 Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth and himself believed, and his whole house.
54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.

This is Lent, we’re supposed to be repenting, fear of the Lord and all that… right? Well, yes it is, but that’s not the whole of it. We are called to be joyful in all that we do because Jesus is present and working at all times. Even during this Lent, during this time of solemn repentance where we might be lamenting and reflecting on how we are sinners, we ought to keep in mind how good God truly is. He created us to be a joy. He rejoices in us, and loves us through the Holy Spirit in ways we don’t even see. We may be unworthy of such a great love, but that won’t stop the flame of love that is Jesus Christ! So today, I encourage you, and I encourage myself J, to be joyful in the sacrifices we’re making this Lenten season. Do not lament, but rejoice in the Lord, for even during times of hardship He is at work always for our greater benefit! Okay…….back to the point! John 4:48 unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe does not mean one should view “signs” negatively. To the contrary, Jesus’ miracles are one of the primary means God uses to bring people to faith in Him. Here some others Miracles..

Each of the four Gospel records the feeding of the five thousand. In John, this is Jesus’ forth sign showing that HE IS THE SON OF GOD (See John 6:1-15) just as God provided Manna for Israel (See Numbers 11), Jesus provided food. Jesus wanted people to see that He is the bread of Life (See John 6:35). In the fact that Jesus’ turning of water into wine at the wedding is called the first sign in cana of galilee leads the reader to know about more signs. In each case, the emphasis is on the way the “sign” reviled Jesus’ Messianic nature (see John 12:37-40, John 20:30-31) and on the striking nature of the feat. This signs pointed unmistakably to Jesus as Messiah-whether it be the large quality and quantity (See John 2:6,10), the short time required by Jesus to “rebuild” the temple (See John 2:19-20), the long distance healing of the royal official’s son (See John 4:47,49-50); the lame man’s 38 years as an invalid, but he had been crippled 38 years, which is longer than many people in antiquity lived and roughly as long as Israel’s wilderness wanderings (See John 5:5); the abundance food Jesus produced (See John 6:13); the man’s congenital blindness (See John 9:1-2) or Lazarus’s 4 days in the tomb (See John 11:17,39) The phrases He displayed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. Peter’s mother-in-law (Mark 1:31), the centurion’s servant (Matthew 8:13), Jairus’ daughter (Mark 5:41-42), and the paralytic (Luke 5:24-25) were all healed immediately. The blind beggars in Matthew 20:34 were given instant sight. Third, Jesus healed everyone (Matthew 4:24; Luke 4:40). the woman having an issue of blood twelve years Matthew 9:20–22 where Jesus says, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease” Jesus also says, “Your faith has made you well,” to the ten lepers (Luke 17:19) and a blind beggar (Luke 18:42). There are so many examples.. Other times Jesus links faith and healing without using the exact words, “Your faith has made you well,” such as in Matthew 8:13 and 15:28. When Jesus said to certain people, “Your faith has made you well,” He was saying that their faith (their confidence in Him) had been the means of their restoration.

The power of Christ was what effected the cure, but His power was applied in connection with their faith. Just as the faith of some enabled them to receive healing, so healing was sometimes stymied by a lack of faith (see Matthew 13:58). In the same way, salvation comes to a sinner through faith. Everyone who is saved must believe, but it is the power of Christ that saves, not the power of faith. Faith is only the instrument, not the power itself. God wants them to be well and that through their faith—God will reward their faith by healing them through the power of Jesus. He had power over both the physical and spiritual effects of the curse of sin. He healed those afflicted with physical diseases, illnesses, and injuries, even raising the dead, and He cast demons out of those who were possessed by them. Only God can rescue us from the results of the Fall of man into sin—disease and death—and by His miracles, Jesus proved His deity. (The prophecy about Jesus’ miracle healing in, Isaiah 35:5-6 “God wants them to be well and that through their faith—God will reward their faith by healing them through the power of Jesus. He had power over both the physical and spiritual effects of the curse of sin. He healed those afflicted with physical diseases, illnesses, and injuries, even raising the dead, and He cast demons out of those who were possessed by them. Only God can rescue us from the results of the Fall of man into sin—disease and death—and by His miracles, Jesus proved His deity.”)

Psalm 30:2-13
I will extol thee, O LORD; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.
2 O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.
3 O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
4 Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.
5 For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
6 And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.
7 LORD, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.
8 I cried to thee, O LORD; and unto the LORD I made supplication.
9 What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit?  Shall the dust praise thee?  shall it declare thy truth?
10 Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me LORD, be thou my helper.
11 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;
12 To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent.  O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.

Isaiah 65:17-21
For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
18 But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy.
19 And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.
20 There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed.
21 And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.

We all sinned n deserve GOD’s judgment, but our loving FATHER, GOD sent HIS only begotten SON to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in HIM. JESUS, our LORD who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that HE died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buries n rose from the dead according to the Holy Bible. If you truly believe n trust in your heart, receiving JESUS alone as your SAVIOUR, declaring (by Baptism) JESUS is The LORD n SAVIOUR, you will be SAVED from the judgment n spend ETERNITY with GOD in HEAVEN…. In The name of our LORD JESUS CHRIST.. Amen
