Third Sunday of Advent : JOY
(Gaudete Sunday)
Prayer
Today’s reading 1 Corinthians 4:1-5, Romans
15:5-22, Matthew 11:2-10 and 1 Thessalonians 5
Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers
of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover it is required in
stewards, that a man be found faithful. 3 But with me it is a very small thing
that I should be judged of you, or of man's judgment: yea, I judge not mine own
self. 4 For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he
that judgeth me is the Lord. 5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until
the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and
will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have
praise of God.
1 Corinthians 4:1-5

Now when John had heard in the prison the works
of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, 3 And said unto him, Art thou he that
should come, or do we look for another? 4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go
and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: 5 The blind receive
their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the
dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And
blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. 7 And as they departed,
Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into
the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? 8 But what went ye out for
to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are
in kings' houses. 9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto
you, and more than a prophet. 10 : For this is he, of whom it is written,
Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before
thee.
Matthew 11:2-10

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for,
behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For
unto you is born this day in the city of David
a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Luke 2:10-11

Now
the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward
another according to Christ Jesus 6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth
glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Wherefore receive ye
one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God. 8 Now I say that
Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to
confirm the promises made unto the fathers 9 And that the Gentiles might
glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to
thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. 10 And again he saith,
Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. 11 And again, Praise the Lord, all ye
Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people. 12 And again, Esaias saith, There shall
be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him
shall the Gentiles trust. 13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and
peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy
Ghost. 14 And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are
full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.
15 Nevertheless, brethren, I have written the more boldly unto you in some
sort, as putting you in mind, because of the grace that is given to me of God,
16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering
the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable,
being sanctified by the Holy Ghost. 17 I have therefore whereof I may glory
through Jesus Christ in those things which pertain to God. 18 For I will not
dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to
make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, 19 Through mighty signs and
wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round
about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. 20 Yea, so
have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should
build upon another man's foundation 21 But as it is written, To whom he was not
spoken of, they shall see and they that have not heard shall understand. 22 For
which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you.
Romans 15:5-22

But
of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief
in the night. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden
destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they
shall not escape. 4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should
overtake you as a thief. 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children
of the day we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not
sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 7 For they that sleep sleep
in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 8 But let us,
who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and
for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath,
but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 Who died for us, that,
whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. 11 Wherefore
comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. 12 And
we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you
in the Lord, and admonish you; 13 And to esteem them very highly in love for
their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves. 14 Now we exhort you,
brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the
weak, be patient toward all men. 15 See that none render evil for evil unto any
man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
16 Rejoice evermore. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 In every thing give thanks for
this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 19 Quench not the
Spirit. 20 Despise not prophesyings. 21 Prove all things; hold fast that which
is good. 22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. 23 And the very God of peace
sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be
preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Faithful is he
that calleth you, who also will do it. 25 Brethren, pray for us. 26 Greet all
the brethren with an holy kiss. 27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle
be read unto all the holy brethren. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be
with you. Amen.

I
am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2 Every branch in me that
beareth not fruit he taketh away and every branch that beareth fruit, he
purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3 Now ye are clean through the
word which I have spoken unto you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch
cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye,
except ye abide in me. 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches He that abideth in
me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit for without me ye can do
nothing. 6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is
withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are
burned. 7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will,
and it shall be done unto you. 8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear
much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. 9 As the Father hath loved me, so have
I loved you continue ye in my love. 10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall
abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in
his love. 11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in
you, and that your joy might be full. 12 This is my commandment, That ye love
one another, as I have loved you. 13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a
man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do
whatsoever I command you. 15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the
servant knoweth not what his lord doeth but I have called you friends; for all
things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. 16 Ye have
not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and
bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain that whatsoever ye shall
ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. 17 These things I command
you, that ye love one another. 18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated
me before it hated you. 19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his
own but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the
world, therefore the world hateth you. 20 Remember the word that I said unto
you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they
will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours
also. 21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because
they know not him that sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they
had not had sin but now they have no cloke for their sin. 23 He that hateth me
hateth my Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which none
other man did, they had not had sin but now have they both seen and hated both
me and my Father. 25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled
that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. 26 But when the
Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit
of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me 27 And ye
also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
John 15

Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say,
Rejoice. 5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.6 Be
careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known unto God.
