Holy Week – Holy Thursday – Bible Study
The day before Good Friday (Today's reading Matthew 26-27, Mark 14:32-52, Luke 22, John 18:2-12), The Thursday of Holy Week—Maundy
Thursday. Matthew 26:20-35 (Mark 14:17-26, Luke 22:14-30), Now in next chapters
we will see Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection, prophecies in Isaiah 42
and Isaiah 53. Jesus’ physical death fulfills the ceremonies surrounding “the
Passover lamb” and other Old Testament sacrifices. He will become the
sacrificial atonement for the peoples sin. Most likely the third of four cups
in the Passover observance-“the Cup of Blessing”, or “the cup of redemption”. The
cup foreshadow, THE SHEDDING OF JESUS’ BLOOD AND HIS ABSORBING OF GOD’S WRATH.
THIS OPENS THE WAY FOR THE REDEMPTION OF ALL PEOPLE THROUGH THE NEW COVENANT
RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD THAT WAS PROMISE TO ALL. This was the last time Jesus
drink vine, water then He got arrest and harass by the Jews and Romans; they
didn’t gave Him food or drink that’s why He said “But I say unto you, I will
not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, UNTIL THAT DAY WHEN I drink it
NEW WITH YOU IN MY FATHER’S
KINGDOME.”
Luke 22:7-16
“..And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we
may eat..” From Bethany Jesus sent two of His
disciples, Peter and John ahead to the Upper Room in Jerusalem to make the
preparations for the Passover Feast.
That evening
after sunset, In
Matthew 26:25, All the disciples around the table addresses Jesus as “LORD” but
Judas addresses Him as “Rabbi” or “Teacher” there is no record of Judas ever
calling Jesus “LORD”. He ate with them but he didn’t took “the Lord’s supper”
with them.. Matthew 26:25. Judas sold Jesus for 30 piece of silver. In Matthew
26:14-16, 30 pieces of silver in the Old Testament this was the penalty paid by
the owner of an ox that gored a slave to death Exodus 21:32. Equivalent to
about four months’ wages of laborer, this meager sum suggest the low esteem in
which both Judas and the Chief Priest held Jesus.
When Jesus and His disciples sat down together at
the table (Except Judas Mark 14:21). Jesus took the cup, saying, “This cup that
is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood, poured out for many, for
the forgiveness of sins.” Luke 22:17-18 “And he took
the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18 For I say
unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God
shall come.”. The vine
spoke of His blood, indicating the terrible death He would soon experience. In
the same way, He took a loaf of bread and gave thanks to God. As He broke it
and gave it to His disciples, He said, “Take eat, this is My body, which is
given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19 “And he took bread, and gave thanks,
and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for
you: this do in remembrance of me.” He declared that the bread spoke of His body
which would be broken. There was not a broken bone, but His body was so badly
tortured that it was hardly recognizable Isaiah 53:4-7 “Surely he
hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows yet we did esteem him stricken,
smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he
was bruised for our iniquities the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and
with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have
turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of
us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth
he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is
dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.”( See also in Ps 22:12-17). He, the
perfect Son of God, became the fulfillment of the all Old Testament prophecies
concerning a Redeemer Genesis 3:15 “And I will
put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it
shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” (See also Psalm 22; Isaiah
53). It was during
this last meal that Jesus mentions that Peter will dynes Him three times and
one of His disciples would betray Him and He will not drink of the fruit of the
vine again until He drinks it again with His followers in the Father’s kingdom.
Luke 22 :33-34
“Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of
thee, yet will I never be offended. 34 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto
thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.” And John
13:21 “When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and
said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.” All four Gospels, the good news of the Lord Jesus’s death and
resurrection.
As the Lamb of
God, Jesus was about to fulfill the meaning of the Passover by giving His body
to be broken and His blood to be shed in sacrifice, freeing us from sin and death. When He said, “Do this in
remembrance of me,” Luke 22 :19 He specified this was a ceremony that must be continued in
the future. It specified also that the Passover, which required the death of a
lamb “Thou shalt
therefore sacrifice the passover unto the LORD thy God, of the flock…”
Deuteronomy 16:1-8 and looked forward to the coming of the Lamb of God who would
take away the sin of the world, was fulfilled in the Lord’s Supper John 1:29
“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of
God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”. The New Covenant replaced the Old Covenant when
Christ, the Passover Lamb was sacrificed; read Hebrews
8:8-13 and 1 Corinthians 5:7 “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new
lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for
us:”, The
sacrificial system was no longer needed (Read full) Hebrews 9:25-28 “…but now once in the end of the world hath he
appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself…”. And this is
The Lord’s Supper (Holy Communion); It’s a remembrance of what Christ did for
us and a celebration of what we receive as a result of His sacrifice. Amazing
grace…. J
Pastor Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 11:26 about the Lord’s Supper, “For as often
as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he
come.” This places a
time limit on the ceremony—until our Lord’s return. And we look forward to once
again sharing the cup with Christ in the Kingdom of God Matthew 26:29 “But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth
of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my
Father's kingdom.” and see also Mark 14: 25; Luke
22:18. (Important
Note—Read 1 Corinthians 11:27-29)
Second, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet as an
act of humility and service John 13:4-15, “He riseth from supper, and laid aside his
garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into
a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel
wherewith he was girded…”, thereby setting an example that we should love and serve one
another in humility. Then Jesus explained the true meaning of being
washed by Him. John 13:8-20 “…Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that
receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth
him that sent me…” The disciples had experienced the cleansing of salvation and
did not need to be washed again in the spiritual sense. Salvation is a one-time
act of justification by faith Romans 1:17 “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed
from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”, but the
lifelong process of sanctification is one of washing from the stain of sin we
experience as we walk through the world Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men,
that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”. Peter and
the disciples—all except Judas, who never belonged to Christ—needed only this
temporal cleansing. For us, washing feet is symbolic of our role in the body of
Christ. As His followers, we are to follow Him, serving one another in
lowliness of heart and mind, seeking to build one another up in humility and
love and when we serving each other with a loving heart, the Lord promised, we
will be greatly blessed John 13:17 “If ye know
these things, happy are ye if ye do them.”.
That evening, they went out into the night to the
Mount of Olives; He concluded the feast by singing a hymn Matthew 26:30 “And when they had sung an hymn, they went out
into the mount of Olives.”. In John 17:1-26, This is the
real High Priestly Prayer “the Lord’s Prayer” and is often called the High
Priestly Prayer of Christ, because He prays first for Himself and then for His
own-the Twelve, In verse 6, and all who will believe, in verse 20. His hour had
finally come this refers not only to His death but also to His resurrection and
exaltation. “Glory” refers to the cross and resurrection and giving of Eternal Life
directly depends on glorification of the Son. The Father’s granting of “Authority over all flesh” to Jesus
makes the start of New era Isaiah 9:6-7, Daniel 7:13-14. All flesh means the whole human race.
In Matthew 26:47-56, At the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was betrayed with a kiss by Judas Iscariot and arrested by the Sanhedrin. He was taken to the home of Caiaphas, the High Priest, where the whole council had gathered to begin
making their case against Jesus. Meanwhile, in the early morning hours, as Jesus' trial was getting underway, Peter denied knowing Jesus
three times before the rooster crowed.
We are saved by grace, through faith, apart from
works Ephesians 2:8–9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that
not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should
boast.” when we come
to Christ and being Baptized with the water and the Spirit for the washing of
our sins, we can be sure that is permanent and complete Acts 2:38
“Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the
remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” and Mark 16:16 “He that
believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be
damned.”.
Matthew
26:36-56 (Mark 14:32-52, Luke 22:39-53, John 18:2-12)
Then cometh
Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples,
Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.
37 And he took
with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very
heavy.
38 Then saith
he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here,
and watch with me.
39 And he went
a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it
be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou
wilt.
40 And he
cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What,
could ye not watch with me one hour?
41 Watch and
pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the
flesh is weak.
42 He went
away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may
not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.
43 And he came
and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.
44 And he left
them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.
45 Then cometh
he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest:
behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of
sinners.
46 Rise, let
us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
47 And while
he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great
multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the
people.
48 Now he that
betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is
he: hold him fast.
49 And
forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
50 And Jesus
said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands
on Jesus and took him.
51 And,
behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his
sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
52 Then said
Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take
the sword shall perish with the sword.
53 Thinkest
thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more
than twelve legions of angels?
54 But how
then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
55 In that same
hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with
swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple,
and ye laid no hold on me.
56 But all
this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all
the disciples forsook him, and fled.
1 Corinthians
11:23–34
For I have received of the Lord that which also I
delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed
took bread
24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and
said, Take, eat this is my body, which is broken for you this do in remembrance
of me.
25 After the same manner also he took the cup,
when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood this do
ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink
this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and
drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood
of the Lord.
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him
eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily,
eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among
you, and many sleep.
31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not
be judged.
32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of
the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together
to eat, tarry one for another.
34 And if any man hunger, let him eat at home;
that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order
when I come.
Philippians 2:1-11
If there be therefore any consolation in Christ,
if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and
mercies,
2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having
the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
3 Let nothing be done through strife or
vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than
themselves.
4 Look not every man on his own things, but every
man also on the things of others.
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in
Christ Jesus
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not
robbery to be equal with God
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took
upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled
himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and
given him a name which is above every name
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should
bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that
Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Hebrews 8:8-13
For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold,
the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house
of Israel and with the house of Judah
9 Not according to the covenant that I made with
their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the
land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them
not, saith the Lord.
10 For this is the covenant that I will make with
the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into
their mind, and write them in their hearts and I will be to them a God, and
they shall be to me a people
11 And they shall not teach every man his
neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord for all shall know
me, from the least to the greatest.
12 For I will be merciful to their
unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made
the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish
away.”.
Hebrews 9:25-28
Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as
the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;
26 For then must he often have suffered since the
foundation of the world but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared
to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die,
but after this the judgment
28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of
many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without
sin unto salvation.
Romans 6:9–10
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead
dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once:
but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
Luke
22:7-22 (Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 14:17-25; ; and John 13:21-30)
Then came the day
of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.
8 And he sent
Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.
9 And they said
unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?
10 And he said
unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet
you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth
in.
11 And ye shall
say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the
guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?
12 And he shall
shew you a large upper room furnished there make ready.
13 And they went,
and found as he had said unto them and they made ready the passover.
14 And when the
hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.
15 And he said
unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I
suffer
16 For I say unto
you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of
God.
17 And he took
the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves
18 For I say unto
you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall
come.
19 And he took
bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my
body which is given for you this do in remembrance of me.
20 Likewise also
the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which
is shed for you.
21 But, behold,
the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.
22 And truly the
Son of man goeth, as it was determined but woe unto that man by whom he is
betrayed!
Isaiah 53:4-7
Who hath believed
our report? and to whom is the arm of
the LORD revealed?
2 For he shall
grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground he hath
no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we
should desire him.
3 He is despised
and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief and we hid as
it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he hath
borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows yet we did esteem him stricken,
smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was
wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities the
chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like
sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD
hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was
oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth he is brought as a
lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he
openeth not his mouth.
8 He was taken
from prison and from judgment and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the
living for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
9 And he made his
grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no
violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it pleased
the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief when thou shalt make his soul
an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the
pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
11 He shall see
of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied by his knowledge shall my
righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore will
I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the
strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death and he was numbered with
the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the
transgressors.
Psalm 22:12-17
Many bulls have compassed me strong bulls of
Bashan have beset me round.
13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a
ravening and a roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones
are out of joint my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and
my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
16 For dogs have compassed me the assembly of the
wicked have inclosed me they pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I may tell all my bones they look and stare
upon me.
We all sinned n deserve GOD’s judgment, but our loving FATHER, GOD sent HIS only begotten SON to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in HIM. JESUS, our LORD who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that HE died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buries n rose from the dead according to the Holy Bible. If you truly believe n trust in your heart, receiving JESUS alone as your SAVIOUR, declaring (by Baptism) JESUS is The LORD n SAVIOUR, you will be SAVED from the judgment n spend ETERNITY with GOD in HEAVEN….
In The name of our LORD JESUS CHRIST.. Amen
