Lent – Day 28 – Bible Study
In the Gospel of John 7 Jesus’ visited to the
feast “Feast of booths”. He was debated by His half-brothers, about six month
prior to the crucifixion. During this feast, for six consecutive days a
procession of priest carried water in Golden vessel into the temple area. This
pouring of water was thought to have physical and spiritual significance, on
the seventh day, “the great day” (See John 7:37) no water was carried. It was
then that Jesus stood and taught of the “RIVERS OF LIVING WATER” (See John
7:38) and especially significant reference to the Holy Spirit.
John
7:1-2, 10, 25-30
After
these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because
the Jews sought to kill him.
2 Now
the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.
10 But
when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not
openly, but as it were in secret.
Then
said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?
26 But,
lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know
indeed that this is the very Christ?
27
Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth
whence he is.
28 Then
cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know
whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye
know not.
29 But
I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.
30 Then
they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not
yet come.
“Who is he to call himself a child of the
Lord? Who is he to think that he’s too good to live like us?” An expression
found only here and in Mark 1:5 probably referring to the Jerusalem mob. They
did not originate the plot against Jesus, but they knew of it. But the hour is
not come yet! and Jesus went out into Judea to spread His teaching..
John
7:40-53
Many of
the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the
Prophet.
41
Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of
Galilee?
42 Hath
not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the
town of Bethlehem, where David was?
43 So
there was a division among the people because of him.
44 And some
of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
45 Then
came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them,
Why have ye not brought him?
46 The
officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
47 Then
answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?
48 Have
any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?
49 But
this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.
50
Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)
51 Doth
our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?
52 They
answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look for out
of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
53 And
every man went unto his own house.

When we encounter God, something resounds in
our hearts. This can be in different ways and cause different feelings within,
but God makes his presence known. For me, I often encounter God through others.
When I hear something I needed to hear or am loved in a way I needed to be
loved, my heart becomes set on free. But too often, that is not enough. Like
the crowds and Pharisees in the Gospel, I become caught up in the details. Despite
encountering God, I become anxious about why I should be wary. While wariness is
not bad in and of itself, it should not dictate actions. The crowds and
Pharisees become obsessed with the location of Jesus’ birth. While it is a
valid idea, it is also not an issue. The Old Testament foretold that the Christ
was born in Bethlehem of the line of David. Rather than reacting to God with
fear, God calls us to have faith in Jesus as the Messiah - faith not just in
the abstract idea of a god but in a God that reveals himself to us, a God that
speaks to our hearts like no other.
Psalm
34:17-21
The
righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their
troubles.
18 The
LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a
contrite spirit.
19 Many
are the afflictions of the righteous but the LORD delivereth him out of them
all.
20 He
keepeth all his bones not one of them is broken.
21 Evil
shall slay the wicked and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.
Psalm 7:2-12
Lest he
tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.
3 O
LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands;
4 If I
have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered
him that without cause is mine enemy)
5 Let
the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon
the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust.
Selah.

Arise, O LORD, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine
enemies and awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded.
7 So
shall the congregation of the people compass thee about for their sakes
therefore return thou on high.
8 The
LORD shall judge the people judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness,
and according to mine integrity that is in me.
9 Oh
let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just for the
righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.
10 My
defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart.
11 God
judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.
12 If
he turn not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready.
Jeremiah
11:18-20
And the
LORD hath given me knowledge of it, and I know it then thou shewedst me their
doings.
19 But
I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not
that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with
the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his
name may be no more remembered.
20 But,
O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the reins and the heart,
let me see thy vengeance on them for unto thee have I revealed my cause.

We all sinned n deserve GOD’s judgment, but our loving FATHER, GOD sent HIS only begotten SON to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in HIM. JESUS, our LORD who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that HE died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buries n rose from the dead according to the Holy Bible. If you truly believe n trust in your heart, receiving JESUS alone as your SAVIOUR, declaring (by Baptism) JESUS is The LORD n SAVIOUR, you will be SAVED from the judgment n spend ETERNITY with GOD in HEAVEN….
